Randy DeLeon graduated from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi (TAMUCC). He received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and master’s degree in Computer Science – Networking Concentration in May 2007.
DeLeon, now 26-years-old, like many undergraduate freshmen was unsure of what to study when he entered college. During his sophomore year he decided to go into Computer Science.
“I was always interested in computers when I was growing up,” he said. “The way they worked, the availability of them, and the software that ran on computers were always a bonus.”
After completing his undergraduate degree in Computer Science, DeLeon felt he was not ready to leave school and decided to attend graduate school at TAMUCC.
“I decided to stay and learn as much as I could,” he said. “In the end, I’m quite content and glad with my choice back then. It turns out that going to graduate school really does have its benefits, in the end.”
DeLeon said graduate school allows for better education and preparation and employers are always looking to hire someone with a master’s degree.
“I had several job offerings before I accepted my current position,” he said.
Graduate school was not an easy ride for DeLeon, and one of his greatest struggles was with self-dedication. Towards the end of graduate school, he felt burned-out and tired of exams, research and book-study. With help and support from his family, DeLeon was able to finish school.
I grew up in a typical Mexican American “hardship life,” with not much, he said about his family who always instilled hard-work.
DeLeon is currently working for Dell as a software testing analyst. His work does not include research, instead, real-world applications of software, the usage there-of, the HMI side of it, and the business end. His current project is opening up a factory in Poland where laptops will be created for the region.
DeLeon plans on getting his Doctorate and his goals are to continue learning in his current field and “become a stronger force” for his team. He would also like to step onto the development side of such projects and enhance his programming skills with real world experience.
After overcoming his struggles and being where he is at today, De Leon encourages all students to attend graduate school.
“It’ll be rough in the beginning – it still is a bit for me, but don’t worry,” he said.
